A diversion…

While I’m deciding what to do for the best with my novel (I think I already know but I’m procrastinating a little longer) I’ve decided to try my hand at a short story. Given that my major flaw is using 20 words when 5 would suffice, this could all go horribly wrong!!

I’ve got the beginnings of a story and I (kind of) know where I want to take it. However, I’m finding there’s not a lot of room to develop a plot in a short story (surprise, surprise) so it is not as easy as I first thought.

I undoubtedly have an awful lot to learn about writing fiction but I’m sincerely hoping that practice makes perfect. My only problem now is trying to find time to write anything substantial without any disturbances. Virginia Woolf was right when she said that all a woman needs to write is a room of her own with a lock on the door and £500 a year, although in today’s money, I suppose that should be more like £50,000!!! One day, I hope that this dream will be a reality and I can while away my days honing my imagination and writing until I can write no more.

In the meantime, I’ll just wait until 8:30 until the children are in bed and spend my couple of hours of ‘peace’ attempting to enhance my writing abilities. Roll on bedtime…
