A Ghost of Magic by J L Clayton

A few months ago, I had a conversation on Twitter with JL Clayton (@JLClaytonBooks) and since then, she has become a lovely friend. The magic of social media! Having read her first two books in the Chosen Saga, A Spark of Magic and A Blaze of Magic, in quick succession, casting aside another sequel from another author that I had been eagerly awaiting, I was really keen to see where she would take Charlie and her band of lust-filled boys on her magical journey.

I wasn’t disappointed in the least. Clayton has developed Charlie from the obstinate, innocent teenager of book one to a determined, feisty young lady in book three. That’s not to say that Charlie has fully evolved into someone who knows what she wants and goes for it, but she has most certainly made a progression from book one and two, as she becomes more aware of her powers and what she can do with them.

At the end of A Blaze of Magic, Nikko was struck by a spell by the evil Kate and Charlie unsuccessfully tried to revive him, instead making him a ghost who was tethered to Charlie’s magic. In A Ghost of Magic, Nikko is getting used to life as a ghost while Charlie is determined to try and find a solution to his ghostly state. However, Nikko is just one of her worries as Crispin, the Traveller, looms large. Disguised as new boy, Cris, he weaves his way into Charlie’s life in order to gain her powers and toy with her along the way. As he manipulates her friends and manages to quell any suspicions raised about who he really is, Crispin finds himself fighting a burgeoning feeling of affection for Charlie.

Clayton’s real talent is in the way she changes the narrative voice to suit each character so that they could have been written by different authors, they are all so distinctive. In this book, the story is told in turn by Nikko, Charlie and Crispin. Clayton doesn’t try and make Nikko and Charlie appear older than they are. Whilst they are on the cusp of adulthood, their naivety is displayed through the narrative, whereas Crispin is more formal, an adult in every sense of the word.

There is a real sense throughout the book that this book is a build up to something big and although there are climactic episodes in A Ghost of Magic, it still feels like this is an ongoing journey and certainly the ending of the book leaves more questions than answers, which is a good way to leave it when, as I understand it, this will be a four book series. Clayton keeps the reader gripped throughout as Charlie is duped on regular occasions then enlightened to her powers and to those surrounding her.

The men in Charlie’s life play the largest presence as Tru, Jace, Asher and Crispin fight for Charlie’s affections. I have my own opinion on who Charlie should end up with but time will tell! That’s assuming that these suitors really are in love with her and not being drawn to her by magical means. However, I think that this will be addressed in the next book. At least, I hope so!

Ultimately, this book is a rollercoaster journey between the mortal and magical worlds. Clayton navigates Charlie through her confusion over her powers and emotions by juxtaposing Charlie’s ever-changeable thoughts to Crispin stoic determination and arrogance that he reigns supreme. Clayton has answered questions raised by A Blaze of Magic and left plenty of questions to be answered in the next book. I, for one, can’t wait to read it.

Guest Review by JL Clayton: A Light in the Darkness by Kevin E. Hatt

A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS A HASZARD NARRATIVE

So Haszard is determined to find out who kills his friend, which takes him on a wild ride that he will never forget. Hasz is known for sticking his nose into things that put him in hot water. As the story progresses, so does Hasz’s love life and humor. Life becomes more and more dangerous for Hasz and attempts on his life seem to keep coming. He meets the woman of his “dreams.” Whatever, I think she is hiding something, but if she is you don’t find it out in the first book. Author Kevin E. Hatt did an amazing job with the first book in the Haszard series. The first book had a little bit of romance with elements of adventure and humor. I loved Hasz with his witty and snarky ways. Reminds me of someone I know. Author Hatt did such a wonderful job writing and building the world of our Haszard. I enjoyed this book. 5 stars, bravo! You are an amazingly talented writer.

Guest Review by JL Clayton: Sciaphobia by Roy Dodd

I can’t really say this book is a book about good and evil, when the evil ones are also the good one’s! This book was very fascinating. I don’t really like books with religious aspects, because there are so many ways the readers can get offended. If you believe in God and the author writes bad things about God, well you’re not going to like the book. If you don’t believe in God and the author writes how amazing God is, yeah you get what I’m saying. However, Author Dodd did not do that. He wove the elements of religion into Sciaphobia nicely. There are so many unique characters. I really enjoyed Shadow’s storyline and the one that possessed him was wicked. I would have loved to read more of Shadows and Anna’s relationship. So maybe there will be a second book?! All in all, I enjoyed this read. I finished it within 2 days. It really captured my attention. If you like horror, action, mystery and a little love, this is your book.  If you like storylines with a lot of blood and a crazy possessed woman hell bent on becoming God, this is your book. Five stars. Wonderful job.

Guest Review by J.L.Clayton: Night People by Larry J. Dunlap

NIGHT PEOPLE, the first book in an intimate literary memoir, follows the first three of six years in the life of a young singer and his Midwestern friends as they strive for success in a coming-of-age music and romance-filled journey in 1960’s-era California and Las Vegas by Author Larry J. Dunlap.
So a friend of mine told me about this book: Night People. She said I would love it, yet I was skeptical because I’m not a nonfiction reader. However; my friend has really good taste in books so I gave this one a try. I’m very happy I did. Night People is a wonderful book, I found myself forgetting that it was a biography. It reads like a fictional book, so it was a very easy read for me. I never lost interest. Author Dunlap is such a beautiful writer. I found myself lost in the book, as if I was watching a really good movie. If you can make me forget that I was reading a biography and take me to that imaginary place, than you did a brilliant job. Bravo! I’m looking forward to reading your next book. 5🌟

Guest Review by JL Clayton: 101 Questions for Humanity: Coffee Table Philosophy by J. Edward Neill

101 Questions for Humanity, by Author J Edward Neill, is just what the title proclaimed: Questions for humanity. It’s actually very fascinating. These are questions you might, or might not, have thought about. I found myself answering them as I read along, which I’m sure was the author’s intent. This, in my opinion, could be a little question game you play on the road, or with friends, to get to know someone’s take on life and what they value. There’s one question that asked: “Two fires are raging. You can rush into one house and save your child. Or you can rush into the other and save 100 people. Which house?”

I am a mother, I love my child more than anyone or thing. My answer would be my child.
These are the kind of in-depth questions you will be asked in this book. If it wasn’t for the fact that I am a fan of Author Neill’s and that the book was free, I wouldn’t have seen myself purchasing it. Yet, I loved the questions that are asked. I’m going to use them on some of my friends and family. This, to me, is the ultimate in-depth questions game: To know someone’s deep dark feelings

Guest Review by JL Clayton: Saturday Night Lovers: An Erotic Short Story by Beth Scarlett.

Saturday Night Lovers: An Erotic Short Story by Beth Scarlett is indeed a really short story, 2000 words short. I like short stories, but this… It’s very well written and I do love erotic books; yet this one was only sex. I know, normally people are like “let’s get to the sex already” but I would have liked a little more to set the tone. So Meg, our main character is a 19-year-old intern at a publishing company. The man she sleeps with is of course the boss’s son, who is 25 and a billionaire. It starts off like this: He knocks on her door, she lets him in. They say a couple of words and then they have sex, but it’s good sex. After that he gets up and leaves, but before he goes, Meg asks him if he wants to do it again sometime. He says, “Same time next Saturday?”

If this book had just a little more, I would have given it a 5 star rating. Overall, it was a good read.

Guest Review – How to Survive a Stuffed Bear Attack by Max Bear as told to Kris Ball – review written by Author J L Clayton

Is Max trying to have stuffed bears take over the world, or just wanting to share the love?

Get this book for your kid/kids so you can find out for yourself! So, I connected with this sweet bear Max and his human author, Kristina Ball, on Twitter. I instantly fell in love. Kristina and her sidekick Max are witty and lovable. Although I don’t read children’s books anymore, I will buy them for family members and friends. So I asked Kristina about her book: How to Survive a Stuffed Bear Attack. I asked if I could possibly get a signed copy of the book with her name and. of course, Max’s. Once I received the book, I decided to read it. I am so happy I did. Sometimes we, as adults, take life and ourselves way too seriously. For some people, it’s good to step back and remember when you were little. This was a fun, cute book that will have you wanting to go buy, or hold, a stuffed bear. If Max had his way, every person in the world would have their very own stuffed bear to love.

Here’s what it’s all about:

You think stuffed bears are nice and sweet and soft and cuddly and super lovable, right? But that isn’t always the way it is. And Max tells you why in How to Survive a Stuffed Bear Attack.

He’s usually a good little stuffed bear. Except when you bribe him with the promise of his very own Power Wheel. Then he is ready to share some pretty amazing things about stuffed bears; secret things. Like the fact stuffed bears can attack at any time. It’s true.

In this colorful picture book for children, Max shares the steps of the stuffed bear attack and the only way humans can survive them. But you can’t let Mr. Perkins, head of the Secret Stuffed Bear Council, know that Max opened his big mouth. Otherwise, he could be in serious trouble, maybe even banished from the Secret Stuffed Bear Council forever. So you can’t tell anyone you heard these things from Max. I hope you can you keep a secret.
